Privacy & data
What the MythBrowse open build stores, what leaves your computer, and when.
The open build has no telemetry, no analytics and no account. Your history, bookmarks, passwords, chats and settings stay on your computer. The full notice is PRIVACY.md in the repository.
Stored on your machine
| OS | Profile folder |
|---|---|
| Windows | %LOCALAPPDATA%\MythBrowse Open Build |
| Elsewhere | $XDG_DATA_HOME/mythbrowse-open |
| Any | $MYTHBROWSE_PROFILE_DIR, if set |
It holds history, bookmarks, the downloads list, open tabs (for session restore), site permissions, settings and saved Myth conversations. Saved passwords and kept cookies are encrypted with a key protected by Windows (DPAPI) or the Linux Secret Service. API keys are kept in the operating system's secure storage, never in settings files or logs. Logs are written locally too (see Install & build).
What leaves your computer
- Web pages you visit: what any browser sends to the site.
- Address-bar suggestions: the text you type goes to DuckDuckGo. You can turn them off in Settings.
- Searches: your query goes to your chosen search engine.
- Update check: once a day, a read-only request to GitHub for the latest release. You can turn it off, and it never runs in private sessions.
AI requests
AI requests go only to the provider you configure, and only when you send Myth a message, use a Myth panel action or click Ask Myth to fix. When you ask about a page, the request includes that page's address, title and visible text and/or your selection, never form fields and never from sites you set to Don't share with Myth. JustMyth does not receive your AI conversations. Use Ollama to keep everything on your computer.
Built-in blocker
MythBrowse includes a built-in content blocker (blocker crate). A fuller ad and tracker blocker is in development builds.
Sync
The end-to-end encrypted sync client is off and compiled out by default in the open build. Nothing leaves your computer through sync.
Private sessions
mythbrowse --private saves no page or chat history and makes no update check.
